Time to Return to the Winnipeg Jets

It never occurred to me how long this name debate was going to last, but after weeks and weeks of debate, the new Winnipeg team has finally chosen a name to represent its city.

The team in Winnipeg will go with the name that its city has been originally called -- the Winnipeg Jets. It is expected to make its announcement tonight at the NHL Entry Draft in St. Paul, Minnesota. Although it seems like an unlikely choice since teams don't usually go with the old names they originally had, this sounds like an outstanding choice.

First of all, I didn't understand why the first Jets team decided to abandon a Canadien city and move to Phoenix, because Phoenix virtually has no interest in hockey to this point. But now that the Jets are back, this is a team that should stay in the NHL for many, many years to come. Also, the Jets were a proud franchise at one point, heralding players like Teemu Selanne and Shane Doan. So now the new Winnipeg Jets will be getting the old Atlanta Thrashers players, like Nik Antropov and Ondrej Pavelec, two stars who have been unable to provide the offense Atlanta needed to get into the playoffs. Now that they have returned to Canada, it seems like they'll find a way to get that offense going again.

All in all, the new Winnipeg Jets should be able to get the job done this time around. Atlanta couldn't keep it and now the Winnipeg team is called the Jets. Hopefully, they'll be able to make a playoff run and hopefully earn themselves a place atop the standings this year. However, they are in the Eastern Conference and it might be harder with teams like Boston who will stand in the way of the Jets' chances. Hopefully, this Jets team can prove that back in Canada, it still has the magic it was before the first Jets team left.
